Scotland in Europe |
Scottish businesses should not be afraid to harness
the widespread high regard in which Scotland is held
across Europe, in developing existing and building new
business opportunities in the enlarged EU, according
to Scottish MEP John Purvis. In an address to Aberdeen
and Grampian Chambers of Commerce today, he stressed
how business ventures should be encouraged to try new
initiatives if they want to take advantage of opportunities
in the expanded market.
John Purvis told Chamber of Commerce delegates:
"Many have expressed concerns that the focus of
Europe will shift as support is being channelled to
the Accession States. But EU enlargement offers new
markets and new opportunities for businesses that are
looking to expand or to try something new.
"It’s too easy for enterprises to shy away
from trying a new venture or new avenue for their business
because of the fear of failure. Scotland has a history
of innovation, so our budding entrepreneurs should be
encouraged to try out new ideas and explore new opportunities.
"We should not be afraid to build on Scotland’s
unique heritage and culture which offer the opportunity
for businesses to differentiate their products and to
target niche markets. Even our tartan image has been
invaluable, not only for tourism but for an appreciation
of the quality products that Scotland has to offer.
Scotland is also respected worldwide for its contribution
to philosophy, literature, art, invention and industrial
development.
"If we build on our strengths and look to capitalise
on the opportunities which an expanded single market
has to offer, then Scottish business can engineer itself
into the heartland of Europe. With the Accession States
expected to become the fastest-growing economies in
Europe in coming years, our businesses with initiative
and imagination – and the determination to rise
to the challenge – should be looking forward to
a prosperous future.”
