| Welcome to my web site. Here you can
find out about the work I do for my constituents
in Scotland as a Member of the European
Parliament and my particular concerns and
campaigns on their behalf.
2004 was a year of renewal in the European
Union – a new Parliament and a new
Commission each with ten new member states
among them. Only 15 years ago eight of these
were Communist countries and we were glowering
at each other over the Iron Curtain. Now
we are friends and colleagues with a common
purpose.
Christmas is also a time of renewal. In
pre-Christian times there was a festival
at mid-winter as the days begin to grow
imperceptibly longer again and tiny signs
of impending spring begin to appear. This
is therefore the time of year that Christians
celebrate spiritual renewal with the birth
of Jesus Christ, who gave us a new way of
living our lives in harmony with our neighbours
and even with our enemies.
With our young soldiers exposed to dangers
in Iraq, with even charity workers and peacemakers
suffering kidnap and vengeful death, the
world does not present a pretty picture.
And much of this is taking place in the
lands we call Holy, the Lands of the Bible.
Let us hope and pray for a resolution during
2005 of these desperate man-made conditions
and look for a spirit of renewal which brings
about peace, good neighbourliness and mutual
compassion – such as the baby born
in Bethlehem 2000 years ago expected of
us.
With best wishes for a happy Christmas and
peaceful New Year – with a very special
thought for those families who have loved
ones exposed to danger in the Middle East.
